This classical Regency spa town first became famous in the eighteenth century with the discovery in 1716 of its healing waters. With the visit of King George III  in 1788 the town became a fashionable resort resulting in the splendid Regency architecture.

Between1780 and 1840 Cheltenham developed rapidly and is the most complete Regency town in England.

The Pump rooms still offer visitors the opportunity to "take the waters". Wide tree-lined avenues, beautiful parks as well as many cultural and social events make Cheltenham a very popular place for visitors.

The town entertained many famous visitors including the Duke of Wellington and Queen Victoria whilst she was still a princess. Other visitors included Jane Austen, Lord Byron and Daniel Defoe. The birthplace of the composer of The Planets suite, Gustav Holst, can also be found here.
